Tinubu To Diaspora: Invest Beyond Remittances
President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians in the diaspora to move beyond sending money home and take a more active role in Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking at the 2026 Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference in Toronto, Canada, Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, described the diaspora as a key source of capital, expertise and global connections.
The President said remittances remain vital to millions of Nigerian families but should become “the floor of diaspora engagement rather than its ceiling.”
He urged Nigerians abroad to invest in sectors including agriculture, healthcare, technology, energy, housing, logistics, mining, education and manufacturing.
Tinubu also called for professionally managed investment clubs, sector funds and co-investment vehicles, backed by proper governance, audited accounts and due diligence.
He cited recent economic indicators, including 3.89 per cent GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026, as evidence of improving economic conditions.
The President assured Nigerians abroad that the government would provide more predictable rules, transparent investment opportunities and stronger protection against fraud.
NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also urged Nigerians in the diaspora to see Nigeria not only as home but as a destination for investment.
