BREAKING: Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case In Abuja, 44 Contacts Identified
Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in Abuja after laboratory tests returned positive for a female patient who recently arrived in the country from Uganda.
The Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate, confirmed the diagnosis, saying the patient was receiving medical care in isolation as health authorities moved to prevent further transmission.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the woman developed symptoms on October 7, four days after arriving in Nigeria.
Authorities have identified 44 close contacts and commenced contact tracing. The circumstances surrounding where the woman contracted the virus remain under investigation.
Ebola is a potentially fatal viral disease transmitted through direct contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of infected people or contaminated materials. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Nigeria successfully contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014, when the disease claimed at least eight lives.
