He Gave Them A Second Chance At Life; They Returned To Honour Him
A pioneering heart surgeon, Asif Hasan, has been moved to tears after reuniting with young people whose lives he helped save through complex and often life-threatening operations.
Hasan, who recently retired after a distinguished career at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Pride of Britain Awards.
But the recognition came with an emotional surprise as 19 of his former patients joined him on stage to express their gratitude for giving them a second chance at life.

The young people, some of whom underwent major heart operations as babies or children, embraced the surgeon and recounted how his expertise and compassion had transformed their lives.
According to reports, Hasan wiped away tears as the patients gathered around him, turning the award ceremony into a moving reunion between a doctor and the people whose futures he had helped secure.
The 70-year-old surgeon devoted more than three decades to treating children with complex heart conditions, performing more than 4,000 open-heart operations, including approximately 3,000 as lead surgeon.

His pioneering work in paediatric heart transplantation and mechanical heart-support devices helped more children survive while waiting for donor hearts. He also trained generations of surgeons who continue to save lives.
Beyond the operating theatre, Hasan contributed to surgical camps overseas, helping children in underserved communities access specialised treatment and supporting the training of medical professionals.
One of the former patients who paid tribute to him was Seb Hollingsworth, who underwent life-saving heart surgery at just four months old. Seb later required another operation as a teenager, with Hasan continuing to guide him through his treatment.
Another former patient, Cecilia Adamou, who received a heart transplant as a child, described nominating him for the award as one of the honours of her life.
For Hasan, however, the greatest reward has always been seeing his patients survive and go on to live fulfilling lives.
He expressed gratitude to the colleagues who supported him throughout his career, acknowledging that the work of saving lives depended on dedicated teams of medical professionals.
The emotional reunion offered a powerful reminder that the impact of kindness and professional dedication can extend far beyond the moment a patient leaves the operating theatre.
For the young people who stood beside him, the award was more than a celebration of surgical excellence. It was an opportunity to honour the man whose skills, commitment and compassion helped make their futures possible.
