Video: Nigerian Reportedly Hacked To Death In South Africa: Where Are the Leaders?

A Nigerian man has reportedly been killed in South Africa amid renewed anti-immigrant violence, raising fresh concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in the country and the response of both governments to recurring attacks on foreign nationals.

Sahara Reporters reported that the man was allegedly beaten and butchered to death during renewed xenophobic violence.

The incident comes amid rising tensions over immigration in South Africa, where protests against foreign nationals have reportedly escalated into violence.

South African police said a foreign national was killed by a group of about 50 people in Durban’s central business district on Thursday, October 22. The man, believed to be in his 30s or early 40s, was assaulted and declared dead at the scene.

Police have opened a murder investigation, but the victim’s nationality and the motive for the killing had not been officially confirmed in their initial statements.

Five men were subsequently held for questioning in connection with attacks on foreign nationals in Durban.

The incident has renewed questions about the effectiveness of measures to protect migrants and hold perpetrators of xenophobic violence accountable.

A video circulating in connection with the incident reportedly shows men dancing joyfully after the attack.

However, the circumstances surrounding the footage and whether it depicts the same killing have not been independently established.

The reported celebration, if confirmed to be connected to the killing, would add to concerns about the apparent disregard for human life accompanying such violence.

Where Are the Leaders?
The recurring attacks raise difficult questions about what Nigerian and South African leaders are doing to prevent further killings and ensure that those responsible face justice.

For Nigerians living in South Africa, the fear of violence has become an increasing concern as anti-immigrant protests continue to flare in parts of the country.

The Nigerian Government has condemned xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks and called on South African authorities to protect foreign nationals and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.

In its latest response, the Federal Government said another 114 distressed Nigerians had been evacuated from South Africa, bringing the total number of citizens returned through the ongoing exercise to 2,151.

While evacuation offers immediate relief to citizens who fear for their safety, it also raises questions about the long-term measures needed to prevent further attacks and guarantee the security of Nigerians who remain in the country.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned anti-immigrant violence, while authorities have continued to face pressure over the protection of foreign nationals.

The latest killing underscores the need for more than condemnations and emergency evacuations. Both governments face growing pressure to strengthen preventive measures, ensure credible investigations and prosecute those responsible for attacks on innocent people.
