Olu of Warri: If Our Future Must Change, Our Traditions Must Evolve
The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has called on the Itsekiri people to rethink outdated practices and embrace new approaches if they want to build a better future.
The monarch spoke during his “Speech from the Throne” at activities marking his fifth coronation anniversary in Warri, Delta State.
Atuwatse III said tradition should be respected but must evolve where necessary to meet the demands of the future.
“If our future will be different from our past, our traditions must evolve into a culture that helps us create our future,” he said.
He urged his people to move beyond past differences, build bridges and unite around a common purpose.
“Our strength is not found in the numbers we exclude, but rather in the multitude that can be inspired, empowered and brought together for a common purpose,” he added.
The monarch also challenged the Itsekiri to replace complaints and comparisons with creativity and solution-driven action.
“We must develop new habits that focus more on creating and less on complaining,” he said.
The fifth anniversary celebration attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials and other dignitaries from across Nigeria, highlighting the cultural heritage and royal unity of the Warri Kingdom.
