A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Tibet, killing at least 16 people, injuring 32 others and destroying hundreds of homes.
The quake hit Baqên County in the Nagqu region on Thursday night, about 400km north-east of Tibet’s capital, Lhasa, according to Chinese state media.
Authorities have declared an emergency and deployed rescue teams, but rockfalls have blocked roads, hampering access to affected high-altitude communities.

Power supply has also been disrupted, while 339 homes have collapsed. Strong tremors were felt in the Tibetan cities of Qamdo and Nyingchi.
The region is prone to seismic activity. In 2023, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in China’s neighbouring Gansu province killed more than 120 people.
Tibet and Nepal were also recently hit by devastating floods and landslides linked to a glacier collapse, which reportedly killed at least 1,400 people, with hundreds still missing.
