‘We’re Not Owing Anybody N5bn’ – Kunle Afolayan Dismisses Loan Claim
Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has dismissed reports alleging that he owes FirstBank ₦5 billion over a loan reportedly obtained to finance his 2022 film, Aníkúlápó, describing the claim as false.
Speaking in a video shared on Friday, Afolayan said neither he nor his company owes the bank any money, insisting there is no litigation involving FirstBank.
“We’re not owing anybody ₦5 billion,” the filmmaker said, adding jokingly that he would gladly accept such a loan if any bank was willing to provide it, as he would invest it in projects that would benefit the country.
Afolayan explained that Aníkúlápó was produced under a co-production agreement between Golden Effects Pictures and Netflix, stressing that the arrangement was straightforward and did not involve any outstanding debt.
He also described FirstBank as a valued partner, saying both parties had collaborated on previous projects and continue to enjoy a cordial relationship.
The clarification follows social media reports alleging that the filmmaker secured a ₦5 billion loan from FirstBank to finance Aníkúlápó and was facing legal action over the alleged debt—claims Afolayan has firmly denied.
