Rufai Questions Bwala’s Political U-Turn, Demands Accountability
Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni, has questioned what he described as Daniel Bwala’s political U-turn, insisting that President Bola Tinubu’s spokesman must remain accountable for his past and present public positions.
In a post shared on his verified X handle on Thursday, Rufai maintained that he harboured no personal resentment toward Bwala, stressing that holding public officials accountable is part of the media’s responsibility.
“Dear Bwala, You still remain my brother but I will always hold you accountable. I have nothing against you!” he wrote.
The broadcaster reminded Bwala that he once praised his style of journalism and frequently appeared on his programme to criticise the All Progressives Congress (APC), before later becoming a spokesman for the Tinubu administration.
Rufai said the questions being asked were not driven by hatred but by the need to examine the consistency of Bwala’s public positions over time.
“You can say I feed on hatred today because I am holding you to account. Don’t forget you once defended my style and said I was a formidable journalist.
“The same me that you call hate filled today was the same person you will always readily come on his platform to attack the same APC you now speak for today!” he stated.
Referring to one of Bwala’s previous appearances on Arise Television, Rufai recalled that the presidential spokesman had attempted to downplay Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s reputation for frugality by claiming he had seen him shopping.
According to Rufai, such past statements make it necessary for journalists and the public to ask whether Bwala still believes in the positions he once vigorously defended.
“In this interview, we provided you a platform where you tried to diminish Peter Obi’s frugality by saying you saw him in a shop.
“In this interview you said many things, can we still believe all you said? The media doesn’t hate you, they are just holding you accountable! Let’s be accountable,” he added.
The exchange comes amid growing scrutiny of public officials over changes in their political positions and previous statements following appointments into government.
