‘He Poured So Much Into Me’: US Pastor’s Second Wife Announcement Sparks Debate
A married American pastor and his first wife, a prophetess, have sparked debate after publicly introducing his second wife to their church congregation, with the pastor defending the arrangement as consistent with biblical teachings.
The pastor, Israel Ford, founder of LifeWorks Church in the United States, reportedly married Shakayla Ford nearly three years before she was formally introduced to the congregation.
During a church service, his first wife, Prophetess Lydia Ford, announced that the family was practising a polygynous marriage before introducing Shakayla as her husband’s second wife and her “sister-in-marriage,” according to Gatekeepers News.
Shakayla, who also serves in the church as a minister, expressed happiness about the arrangement, describing it as God’s will.
“He has poured so much into me and into our family,” she told the congregation, adding that the family benefited from the contributions of its members.
She also spoke about Christians who practise polygamy but face rejection from churches because of their marital arrangements, arguing that they should not be denied a place to worship.
Ford subsequently defended his decision in a social media post, arguing that the teaching that a man should have only one wife was “unbiblical.”
He cited Exodus 21:10 to support his position and maintained that he would not abandon what he believed God had revealed to him simply to please people.
The announcement has drawn attention to differing interpretations of biblical teachings on marriage, as well as questions about polygamy within contemporary Christian communities.
While the arrangement was presented by the family as a decision grounded in their faith, it has also prompted wider discussion about the expectations placed on religious leaders and the relationship between personal marital choices and church teachings.
