25 Years On, Trump Ties 9/11 Legacy To Fight Against Iran

President Donald Trump has tied the legacy of the September 11, 2001 attacks to the United States’ ongoing war with Iran, saying America is still fighting the “war on terror” 25 years later.
Speaking at a 9/11 commemoration at the Pentagon on Friday, Trump vowed that the United States would never forget the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.
“Today we renew the sacred oath that we first swore in their names a quarter of a century ago. We will never, ever forget. That’s why we fight today,” Trump said.
He linked the military campaign launched against Al-Qaeda after the attacks to the current conflict with Iran, describing Tehran as the world’s “number one sponsor of terror” and saying the US would ensure it never obtains a nuclear weapon.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth similarly criticised Iran, saying US forces had spent the past six months fighting what he described as the world’s most prolific state sponsor of terrorism.
Trump also used the occasion to criticise what he called domestic “fanatics,” as Republicans continue to attack Democrats over their positions and past comments concerning the 9/11 attacks.

The Pentagon was one of the targets of the 2001 attacks, with 184 people killed when one of the hijacked planes crashed into the building.
