‘It’s A Stupid Comparison’: Majid Michel On Ghana’s Film Industry And Nollywood
Veteran Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has described comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood as unfair, arguing that the countries’ population differences make such comparisons illogical.
Michel made the remarks during an interview on Y1079 FM in Accra, where he explained that Nigeria’s much larger population naturally creates a bigger pool of actors, filmmakers and other industry professionals.
“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me. If you have 50 children and I have 5 children, the possibility that you will have more criminals, doctors, good children and filmmakers than me is very high,” he said.
The actor noted that Ghana has fewer than 40 million people, compared with Nigeria’s population of more than 200 million, arguing that the difference makes it unreasonable to expect the two countries to produce talent and films on the same scale.
“We are less than 40 million in Ghana. Nigeria is over 200 million, almost 300 million. So how on earth would you compare? Mathematically, you should know why,” he added.
Michel also argued that comparisons between developing African institutions and those of older, long-established foreign nations often overlook differences in their histories, systems and stages of development.
