From Founding Member To Exit Door: Sylva Breaks With APC
Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party of abandoning the ideals upon which it was founded.
Sylva, a founding member of the APC, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the party chairman in Ward 4, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
He said he reached the decision after consulting his family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers.
According to Sylva, the APC’s founding ideals had been “thoroughly and unrecognisably thwarted”, making it impossible for him to remain in the party in good conscience.
“I cannot, in all good conscience, continue to belong to a Party whose leaders believe that ‘all is fair in politics,’ and have consistently demonstrated that belief in practice,” he said.
The former governor also accused the APC-led administration of disappointing Nigerians, saying he could see neither a credible attempt nor the possibility of revamping the situation.
Describing the party as a “floundering ship,” Sylva said he was confident Nigerians would use the next election to change the political direction of the country.
He also copied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in his resignation letter, accusing the agency of acting increasingly like an organ of the APC rather than a state institution.
Sylva acknowledged that his exit could expose him and his associates to increased scrutiny, but said he was prepared to take the risk.
“I am fully aware that this action of mine may invite a redoubled witch-hunt against me and my associates, but that is a risk I am willing to take,” he said.
