‘Pensioners Will Not Suffer’ — Adekanmbi Woos Oyo Retirees Ahead Of 2027
The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) in Oyo State, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi, has promised to sustain and improve pensioners’ welfare if elected governor in 2027.
Adekanmbi gave the assurance during an interactive session with retirees at the Pension House, Agbarigo, Ibadan, where he pledged to prioritise the prompt payment of pensions and gratuities.
He said he would sustain the existing arrangement under which pensioners receive their monthly pension alerts by the 25th of each month, adding that his administration would build on the achievements of Governor Seyi Makinde’s government.
According to him, he would also maintain regular engagements with pensioners to understand their concerns and ensure their welfare remained a priority.
“I am standing before you today to make a pledge that under the government of Bimbo Adekanmbi, pensioners will not suffer. All your dues shall be promptly paid,” he said.
Earlier, the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, described life before Makinde’s administration as difficult for retirees, citing delayed pension payments and low monthly benefits.
Abatan said Makinde’s government raised the minimum pension in the state to ₦25,000 from January 2025 and cleared outstanding gratuities inherited from previous administrations.
He said pensioners were keen to know how Adekanmbi would protect the gains recorded under the present government if elected.
“The saying on the lips of Oyo State pensioners, having enjoyed seven and a half years of unbroken peace, prompt payment of pensions and the clearing of unpaid gratuities left by past administrations, is that they don’t want to go back to ‘Egypt’,” Abatan said.
He added that the state’s pensioners, whom he put at about 50,000, alongside their dependants, would consider their welfare when deciding which governorship candidate to support.
