‘I Have Nothing Left To Give’ — Messi Retires From Argentina Duty
Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina after a record 207 caps, bringing an end to his 21-year career with the national team.
The 39-year-old, who made his Argentina debut in 2005, leaves as his country’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer with 125 goals.
Messi guided Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022 and captained the team to the final of the 2026 tournament, where they lost to Spain. He also won two Copa América titles.
In an emotional statement, Messi said the decision had been painful but that he believed the time had come to close the chapter.
“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come,” he said.
“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to offer, and moreover, there are some exceptional young players emerging who deserve this opportunity.”
Messi said he had initially decided to retire shortly after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat but delayed making the announcement following the death of his father, Jorge, in August.
He also revealed the physical toll of the final, saying his legs could no longer continue despite his attempt to push beyond his limits.
Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami, has a contract with the Major League Soccer club until 2028.
