Wike Draws Line Between Tinubu Support, APC Campaign Council
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has drawn a line between his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election and membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential campaign council.
Wike spoke on Saturday after inspecting road projects in Abuja, explaining why he could not serve as Director General of Tinubu’s 2027 campaign.
According to him, he is not an APC member and would rather concentrate on delivering the FCT and Rivers State than take up a campaign position.
“I don’t want to lose my state! I will be in my state. I have two states: FCT and Rivers. What is important is that you are able to deliver those two states. So it is not about being DG,” he said.
Wike recalled that several former presidential campaign DGs, including Rotimi Amaechi, Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal and Simon Lalong, lost their states after leading campaigns.
“If you are DG and you don’t win your state, what is the essence of the DG?” he asked.
The minister said his support for Tinubu did not require membership of the APC campaign structure, noting that he and his allies backed the President in 2023 despite not belonging to the party’s campaign council.
He said the same approach would continue through the “Rainbow Coalition”, a cross-party arrangement supporting Tinubu’s re-election in different states.
The Presidency had earlier announced former Zamfara Governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, as Director General of the APC presidential campaign council.
Meanwhile, Wike said several FCT projects were on course for completion before the 2027 general election, adding that the number could exceed his initial target of 10 projects.
