UBA Staff Who Called Elumelu ‘Tony’ Gets N500,000, Ambassadorial Deal
The young UBA employee who went viral after calling the bank’s chairman, Tony Elumelu, by his first name has received a N500,000 support offer and an ambassadorial deal.
Ossai Success, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, announced the package on Saturday, saying he would also sponsor the woman’s trip to Asaba for the fourth edition of the Delta Social Media Summit.
The offer includes flight tickets, five-star hotel accommodation, a guided tour of developmental projects in Delta State and VIP access to the summit scheduled for Thursday, August 27, at Mariam Babangida Leisure Park, Asaba.
Ossai also offered her a brand ambassador role for the annual Delta Social Media Summit.
Explaining the gesture, the governor’s aide said the woman had faced enough criticism over the incident.
“I know the internet can be harsh. Depression is real, and words cut deep,” Ossai said.
“She made a mistake, but we don’t need to t*rment her daily; she needs our support.”
He urged anyone who knows the woman to ask her to contact him, promising to give her a platform to tell her story.
“Let’s turn this pain into purpose. She won’t be disappointed,” he said.
The controversy began after a video from UBA’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme graduation ceremony showed the woman addressing Elumelu as “Tony” while asking a question.
Elumelu interrupted her, telling her to address him as “Mr Elumelu” or “TOE” instead.
The exchange triggered widespread reactions online, with some Nigerians backing the billionaire’s position, while others argued that the woman may have been influenced by the first-name culture common in some corporate environments.
UBA had celebrated 374 young professionals who completed its Graduate Management Accelerated Programme, describing them as part of the next generation of leaders across its African markets.
