Jason Arday Dies After Turbulent Cambridge Exit
British academic and sociologist Professor Jason Arday has died at the age of 41, days after resigning from the University of Cambridge amid intense scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism and questions about aspects of his professional history.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to Arday’s home in south London shortly after 3pm on Friday following a report from the London Ambulance Service.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the death was unexpected but not believed to be suspicious, adding that a file would be prepared for the coroner. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
Arday became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor when he was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education in 2023. His appointment had been widely regarded as a landmark moment for racial representation in British academia.
However, his position came under growing scrutiny this month over allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding claims about his academic and professional history. Cambridge subsequently announced an independent inquiry into his appointment and career, while Arday resigned from the university last week.
In his resignation statement, Arday said the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” had taken a profound toll on him and those close to him.
Before the controversy, he had built a profile as an academic focused on race, inequality, education and social mobility.
His death comes as Cambridge faces renewed questions over his appointment and the wider scrutiny surrounding the case. The university has expressed sadness over his death.
His autobiography was also published in the United States this week, with its UK publication previously scheduled for later this month.
