2027: Makinde Yet to Endorse Governorship Successor, Aide Clarifies
The Oyo State Government has dismissed speculations that Governor Seyi Makinde has endorsed any individual as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Ibadan, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Suleimon Olanrewaju, described as false reports circulating on social media claiming that the governor had settled for Bimbo Adekanmbi as his preferred candidate.
The clarification followed widespread online reports late Wednesday suggesting that Makinde had already chosen Adekanmbi to fly the flag in the 2027 governorship race.
Reacting to the development, Olanrewaju stated that the governor was still engaged in broad consultations and had not taken a final decision on the matter.
According to him, Governor Makinde would publicly announce his preferred candidate at the appropriate time after concluding ongoing consultations with relevant stakeholders.
Adekanmbi, who served as Commissioner for Finance during the administration of late former governor Abiola Ajimobi, has remained visible in public affairs and political conversations within the state.
His political profile received a boost in 2025 after Governor Makinde appointed him chairman of the committee overseeing the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport, one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the administration.
The appointment further fueled speculations about his growing influence within the governor’s political circle and possible alignment with Makinde’s development agenda.
Political analysts say the rumours surrounding Adekanmbi’s alleged endorsement have already triggered reactions within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and opposition camps, as political consultations and alignments ahead of the 2027 election season continue to intensify in Oyo State.
There have also been fresh speculations that the governor may unveil his preferred aspirant and possibly announce a new political platform in the coming days.
