2027: Jonathan Hints at Presidential Comeback, Promises Wide Consultations
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he would embark on wide consultations before making a decision.
Jonathan made the remark on Thursday in Abuja while addressing a group of supporters who visited his office to urge him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during the meeting, the former president stressed the need for patriotism, peace and credible elections, noting that national development can only thrive in a peaceful and democratic environment.
According to him, young people must remain actively involved in the electoral process and continue to advocate for peaceful and transparent elections across the country.
“The key thing we need in this country is peace,” Jonathan said, adding that credible elections would encourage competent and patriotic citizens to participate in politics and governance.
He also urged Nigerian youths to protect the nation’s democratic values and remain committed to shaping a better future for generations to come.
Reflecting on his international engagements, Jonathan disclosed that he had observed elections in more than 14 African countries, some on multiple occasions, giving him broader insight into democratic processes across the continent.
Responding to calls for him to contest in 2027, the former president said the presidential race was a serious undertaking that required careful consideration and consultations.
“Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely,” he stated.
Jonathan, however, maintained that the overall interest of Nigeria and the future of young people must remain the priority in any political decision ahead of the 2027 elections.
