World Teachers’ Day: NUJ Demands Better Welfare, Working Conditions For Teachers
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on the Federal and state governments to prioritise the welfare, working conditions and professional development of teachers.
The council made the call in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu, to commemorate the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
The NUJ described teachers as critical pillars of national development, stressing that no country could achieve sustainable development without motivated, well-trained and professionally respected teachers.
It expressed concern over challenges facing teachers, including inadequate remuneration, poor working conditions, insufficient teaching facilities, excessive workload and limited opportunities for professional development.
The council urged governments to provide modern classrooms, teaching aids, digital infrastructure and other facilities required for effective teaching, while also involving teachers in the formulation and implementation of education policies.
It further encouraged teachers to embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital learning tools, without losing sight of the ethical standards and human values central to education.
The NUJ commended teachers across Oyo State and Nigeria for their dedication despite prevailing economic challenges, urging them to uphold professionalism, integrity and discipline.
It also called on parents, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support teachers and protect the dignity of the teaching profession.
The council congratulated teachers on the occasion, assuring them of its continued partnership and advocacy for a stronger education system.
