Channels Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, has reacted to the N5 million fine recently slammed on the television station by the National Broadcasting Commission.
Okinbaloye, after the Sunday episode of Politics Today made a statement on the fine of N5 million fine; stating that journalists and broadcasters at the Channels Television “will continue to speak truth to power” declaring that “media will not be silenced as Nigeria belongs to everyone”.
Recall that the NBC had fined the Channels TV following a petition signed by Onanuga,Tinubu’s media aide where he accused the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate of making inciting comments during the interview and also noted that Okinbaloye failed to act professionally by stopping the politician from making such comments.
While appearing on the show, the Vice Presidential candidate of Labour party, Datti Baba-Ahmed on March 22 Baba-Ahmed called on president Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria not to swear in Tinubu as president on May 29 insisting that declaring Tinubu a winner and issuing him a certificate of return was against the constitution.
In response, Okinbaloye disclosed that he and other media professional will not be deterred in standing for the truth as they inform, educate and entertain their audience.
The statement reads:
“I want to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges we as media are facing in Nigeria. Events in the past days have created an environment of fear and uncertainty and threatened the freedom of speech and integrity of the media landscape but despite these challenges, we as journalists and broadcasters remain committed to our duty to inform, educate and entertain our audience.
“We as Channels Television indulge only reasonable and professional journalism and in the face of popular and reckless practice; we play clean and decent even when it looks or sounds unpopular with the crowd or online mob, we do not only for today but for the future and the sustenance of the profession.
“Others want to destroy it but we want to protect it. We will not be deterred by this obstacles. We will continue to stand up for what is right and speak truth to power even in the face of adversity. We will remain brave, strong and resilient and we will not let our voices be silenced. Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
