Tinubu Sets December Deadline For 95% NIN Coverage
President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to achieve 95 per cent National Identification Number (NIN) coverage by December 2026.
Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday in Abuja during the 8th National Identity Day celebration, where he was represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The President said NIN enrolment had risen to about 142 million, compared with over 80 million records in the National Identity Database when his administration assumed office.
He said the government was developing digital infrastructure that would make national identity a foundation for Nigeria’s digital economy and broader economic development.
According to Tinubu, a secure national identity system should support services including banking, healthcare, education, welfare payments, online business and transportation.
He added that the government was also accelerating work on a secure digital infrastructure for authenticating electronic documents, enabling digital signatures and protecting online transactions and official communications.
Tinubu said the broader objective was to build a national identity system that is secure, useful and responsive, while protecting citizens’ privacy and rights.
