Sowore Decries Kuje Prison Conditions, Alleges Tinubu Ordered His Detention
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu was responsible for his imprisonment while raising concerns over the conditions of inmates awaiting trial at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
In a statement posted on his official social media page on Saturday, Sowore said many detainees remained behind bars despite being granted bail, blaming what he described as stringent and unrealistic bail conditions.
He cited the cases of Haruna Garba Gololo, David Nwokorie, and Emorioloye Owolemi, alleging they spent months in custody after failing to meet court-imposed bail requirements.
Reflecting on his own detention, the activist claimed President Tinubu was responsible for sending him to prison, stating, “I was sent to prison by Tinubu.”
Sowore also alleged that of the 1,115 inmates currently held at the Kuje Correctional Centre, about 817 are awaiting trial, while 47 have reportedly been diagnosed with tuberculosis, describing the situation as a major concern for Nigeria’s justice system.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had not responded to the allegations contained in Sowore’s statement.
