NiMet Warns Of Thunderstorms, Flood Risk Across Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and possible flooding across several states on Thursday, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across most parts of Nigeria on Thursday, warning that some areas could experience localised flooding, strong winds and reduced visibility.
In a weather outlook shared on its official X account on Wednesday, the agency said northern states would experience cloudy conditions in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno and Taraba states, with possible lightning and strong winds.
NiMet also forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across parts of Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory in the North Central region.
In the South, morning rainfall is expected in parts of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti states before spreading to most parts of the region later in the day.
The agency warned that prolonged rainfall could trigger localised flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
NiMet advised residents to exercise caution during the storms, urging motorists to drive carefully due to poor visibility and avoid driving or walking through floodwaters.
It also warned against taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms because of the risk of lightning strikes.
The agency further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe and efficient flight operations.
