From Jungle Justice To Public Humiliation? Viral Video Sparks Debate Over Treatment of Crime Suspects
A viral video showing a man suspected of stealing a generator dancing before a crowd has ignited conversations about whether public humiliation is replacing mob justice as communities rethink how they deal with crime suspects.
A viral video circulating on X has sparked widespread debate after showing a young man suspected of attempting to steal a generator from a students’ hostel dancing before a crowd in what many described as an unusual response to an alleged theft.
The footage, shared by X user Newton, has drawn attention not only because of the suspect’s public dance but also because it appeared to contrast sharply with the mob violence—popularly known as jungle justice—that has often accompanied similar incidents in the past.
The Pendulum Media could not independently verify the location of the incident or all the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft at the time of filing this report.
However, an X user who claimed to be a student at the hostel where the incident occurred said the suspect was caught around 6 a.m. after allegedly attempting to steal a generator.
According to the witness, the young man was served a plate of rice, made to dance before onlookers, asked to clean the hostel and later released.
“Our celeb don reach here 😂😂. He came to our hostel by 6 a.m. to steal gen but got caught. He was served rice and he danced. This guy dey throw steps ooo. After which he clean the hostel, all floors and was freed,” the user wrote.
The video has since generated mixed reactions on social media.
Reacting, X user @IamSparrow joked:
“This one don forget say he thief.”
Another user, @Ake_De_Cryptocian, described the incident as evidence of changing public attitudes towards suspected criminals.
“Most important thing now is that our Naija people are beginning to become civilised in understanding and knowledge. Wisdom of handling thieves and criminals is now satisfactory. By now, three years ago, these thieves would be dead… Either they are burnt alive or beaten and stoned to death… As a matter of fact, they are even using them to entertain us.”
The original uploader of the video, Newton, also reacted humorously, writing:
“This one enter big mood.”
In another post, he added:
“You guys tried ooh, una dey pamper.”
While some social media users viewed the incident as a welcome departure from jungle justice, others argued that suspected offenders should not be subjected to public humiliation but handed over to law enforcement agencies for investigation and prosecution.
The incident has reignited discussions about how communities respond to alleged crimes, with many calling for greater respect for due process and the rule of law.
