‘Nigeria Deserves Better’: Christian Elders Ask Tinubu To Drop 2027 Ambition
The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to shelve any plan to seek re-election in 2027, saying Nigeria deserves better leadership after what it described as the administration’s disappointing performance.
In a communiqué dated July 9 and signed by its National Chairman, Samuel Gani, the forum said the Federal Government had fallen short in tackling insecurity, improving the economy and addressing the welfare of Nigerians.
According to the Christian elders, the direction of the Tinubu administration has created more anxiety than hope, prompting their appeal for the President to devote the remainder of his tenure to restructuring Nigeria and laying the foundation for a new constitution instead of pursuing a second term.
The forum also renewed its opposition to the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, describing it as insensitive at a time when Christians, it claimed, continue to bear the brunt of insecurity and violent attacks across the country.
NCEF urged the judiciary to remain impartial in handling election-related matters, warning that Nigeria could not afford any perception of bias as the country approaches another election cycle.
It also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to safeguard its independence and conduct credible, free and fair elections.
On power rotation, the forum argued that although zoning is not provided for in the Constitution, maintaining the North-South arrangement remains vital for national unity, equity and inclusion. It therefore urged Nigerians to support a southern presidential candidate in 2027 to complete the region’s turn.
The Christian elders further demanded an independent investigation into the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), describing the matter as another indication of institutional failure under the current administration.
The forum maintained that Nigerians were yearning for meaningful change, warning that citizens’ patience amid prolonged economic hardship and insecurity should not be taken for granted.
