FIFA has demanded an explanation from Nigerian football authorities over the reported resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau.

In a letter dated September 1, 2026, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström expressed concern over reports that Gusau resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency.

The world football governing body said, if confirmed, the development could violate its rules protecting the independence of national football associations from government interference.

FIFA therefore asked Nigeria to confirm in writing that Gusau’s resignation was voluntary and free from external pressure.

It also demanded an explanation from the Federal Government on the circumstances surrounding the reported resignation, while seeking assurances that the NFF would continue to operate independently and in line with FIFA regulations.

The development could have significant implications for Nigerian football, with FIFA now seeking answers over what led to the sudden leadership shake-up.
