Kogi: 15 Corps Members, Six Others Rescued From Kidnappers
The Nigerian military has rescued 21 kidnapped victims, including 15 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), from a forest in Kogi State.
The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this on Monday, saying the victims, comprising eight males and 13 females, were rescued from the Egume-Ochaja forest.
The 15 NYSC members were among those kidnapped last week while travelling from Abuja to Bayelsa State.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is also happy to announce that a total of 21 victims, comprising eight males and 13 females, 15 of them being National Youth Service Corps members, have just been rescued,” Onoja said.
The rescue came as troops intensified operations against terrorists and criminal elements, particularly in Niger State’s Borgu Local Government Area.
Onoja said the military was working with other security agencies and state institutions through intelligence sharing to identify areas requiring intervention.
He assured residents of Borgu and neighbouring communities that operations would continue until the security threats were sufficiently degraded.
The military spokesman also urged families of abducted persons to remain calm and avoid actions that could compromise ongoing rescue efforts.
Giving an account of operations in August, Onoja said troops neutralised more than 332 terrorists and criminals, arrested 373 and rescued 610 kidnapped victims. Another 201 insurgents reportedly surrendered, while 88 arms and 2,077 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
He said the results reflected improved intelligence gathering, intensified operations and stronger collaboration among security agencies.
