Ebola Patient In Abuja Develops Multi-Organ Failure, NCDC Confirms Strain
Nigeria’s Ebola patient has deteriorated to multi-organ failure, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirming that she is infected with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
The Director of Public Health Laboratory Service at the NCDC, Olajumoke Babatunde, disclosed this on Wednesday during an emergency meeting in Abuja, saying three levels of molecular testing were conducted to confirm the strain.
“The patient’s condition has deteriorated. We did three levels of tests, but all were molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” Babatunde said.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) also confirmed the strain, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
The patient, a female diplomat, arrived in Abuja from Uganda on October 3, 2026, and was admitted to a private hospital after developing symptoms initially resembling malaria.
The Incident Manager of the National Ebola Response, Dr Odianosen Ehiakhamen, said she developed symptoms on October 7 and presented at the hospital on October 11.
The NCDC said 44 close contacts, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts, had been identified and were being monitored.
The patient remains in isolation and is receiving medical care, while health authorities have intensified surveillance and response measures to prevent further spread.
