The Oyo State Government has assured residents that no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been recorded in the state, announcing heightened surveillance and emergency response measures.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, gave the assurance on Wednesday during an interview with journalists, according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, on the state government’s X account.
Ajetunmobi said preparations began in June 2026 to strengthen the state’s readiness for Ebola and other infectious diseases, including diphtheria.

She disclosed that surveillance units had been activated across the 33 local government areas, infection prevention measures strengthened in healthcare facilities, and the Infectious Disease Centre at Olodo prepared for emergency response.
The state is also adopting the One Health approach, involving relevant ministries and the Epidemiology Unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, to improve disease surveillance and response.
“The Government of Oyo State is taking proactive steps to ensure that the state is adequately prepared to respond to any potential outbreak,” she said.
The commissioner warned that Ebola symptoms could resemble malaria in the early stages, urging residents experiencing sudden fever, severe headache, muscle or joint pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, extreme tiredness, abdominal pain or unexplained bleeding to seek prompt medical attention.
She noted that the incubation period ranges from two to 21 days and advised residents to wash their hands regularly, avoid contact with the blood and other body fluids of suspected or confirmed patients, and refrain from handling potentially contaminated materials.
Healthcare workers were also urged to observe infection prevention protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
Ajetunmobi appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, stressing the importance of early detection and prompt reporting.
