Community Pharmacists Urge FG To Recognise Pharmacies As Primary Healthcare Centres
The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has called on the Federal Government to formally recognise community pharmacies as primary healthcare centres, saying the move would strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to quality services across the country.
The ACPN National Chairman, Pharmacist Ambrose Ezeh, made the call in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.
Ezeh said community pharmacies, due to their accessibility and presence at the grassroots, play a critical role in achieving universal health coverage and should be fully integrated into Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.
He urged the Federal Government to recognise community pharmacies as primary healthcare centres without further delay, noting that such recognition would enhance healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved communities.
“I also reiterate the association’s advocacy for the formal recognition of community pharmacies as Primary Healthcare Centres,” Ezeh said.
He argued that the accessibility and frontline presence of community pharmacies make them critical assets in achieving universal health coverage across the country.
The ACPN chairman also called for the full integration of pharmacists into grassroots healthcare and rural development initiatives, stressing that the move would improve health outcomes and strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.
According to him, empowering community pharmacists to play a more active role in primary healthcare would expand access to essential health services and contribute significantly to the government’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage.
