‘No, You Won’t Call Me Tony’ — Elumelu Tells Graduate

United Bank for Africa, UBA, Group Chairman Tony Elumelu has gone viral after correcting a young female graduate who addressed him by his first name during an interactive session.
The exchange happened on Thursday at the graduation ceremony of the bank’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP), where 374 young professionals were celebrated after completing the programme.
In a video making the rounds online, the graduate began her question by saying, “Good morning, Tony.”
Elumelu initially appeared to mishear her, responding, “Toyin? Toyin?” But after she clarified that she had said “Tony,” he told her:
“No, you won’t call me Tony. You’ll call me Mr Elumelu or TOE.”
The graduate quickly corrected herself, saying, “Good morning, Mr Elumelu,” before continuing with her question.
The moment has since attracted reactions online, with many viewers commenting on the light-hearted but firm exchange.
The ceremony celebrated 374 graduates of UBA’s GMAP, a programme designed to develop young professionals for leadership roles across the bank’s operations.
Elumelu said the programme has trained more than 5,000 young professionals, while UBA urged the latest graduates to lead with courage and create meaningful impact across their respective markets.
