OYRTMA Replaces Stolen Manhole Covers, Tackles Road Hazards In Ibadan
The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has begun replacing stolen manhole covers with durable concrete alternatives at strategic locations across Ibadan to reduce accidents and protect road users.
The intervention commenced on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Apata, where the agency’s Chairman, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), supervised the replacement of a stolen cover along the road.
Adekoya said open manholes posed serious risks to motorists, pedestrians, commercial motorcyclists and other commuters, particularly at night and during rainfall.
He said the concrete covers were chosen as a more durable alternative that could also reduce the risk of further vandalism and theft.
The OYRTMA chairman urged residents to stop vandalising public infrastructure and promptly report uncovered manholes, dangerous potholes and other road hazards to the authorities.
The intervention was welcomed by the police and local commercial motorcyclists, who said the affected spot had been linked to accidents and had exposed road users to significant danger.
OYRTMA said it would continue working with relevant agencies to identify and address traffic-related hazards across the state.
