‘I May Not Be Alive to Contest 2027,’ Peter Obi Alleges Government Frustration
The former Labour Party presidential candidate says persistent frustration and alleged intimidation by the government have raised concerns about his safety and political future ahead of the 2027 general election.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said he may not be alive to contest the next presidential poll, alleging that the Federal Government is frustrating his activities and targeting opposition figures.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, excerpts of which were shared on X on Wednesday.
Responding to a question about the possibility of not contesting the 2027 election, Obi said he feared his political future could be cut short.
“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor clarified that he was not making a direct accusation but insisted that he experienced frustration in his daily activities, which he believed was deliberate.
Obi further alleged that the treatment extended to other members of the opposition, claiming they were being targeted and denied privileges ordinarily available to them.
He cited an incident at an airport where he alleged that officials locked his vehicle while other cars parked in the same area were left untouched. He also claimed that some associates had become reluctant to publicly identify with him for fear of attracting unwanted attention.
According to Obi, some supporters had even asked him not to attend family events, including weddings, because of concerns that his presence could expose them to unnecessary scrutiny.
As of the time of filing this report, Obi did not provide evidence to support his allegations, while the Federal Government had yet to respond to the claims.
