Bandits Abduct NECO Candidates, Kill Teacher In Borno School Attack
Suspected bandits on Monday attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, abducting an unspecified number of students who were sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The assailants reportedly stormed the community in the early hours of the day, disrupting the ongoing examination and causing panic among students, teachers and residents.
During the attack, one teacher was shot dead while another sustained gunshot injuries. The exact number of students and teachers taken away by the gunmen has yet to be officially confirmed.
Residents who spoke to journalists alleged that military personnel stationed in the area had left for a routine patrol to nearby Uba, about 16 kilometres away, shortly before the attackers struck.
“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere. They took away students writing NECO and their teachers,” a resident said.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, said several students remain unaccounted for following the attack.
Security agencies have yet to disclose the exact number of victims or provide details on ongoing rescue efforts as of the time of filing this report.
The attack adds to growing concerns over the security of schools in parts of northeastern Nigeria, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted educational institutions.
