United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open after Iran agreed to what he described as sweeping long-term nuclear inspections as part of ongoing negotiations with Washington.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had “fully and completely agreed” to the highest level of nuclear inspections for the foreseeable future, a move he said would guarantee “nuclear honesty” and pave the way for continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
According to Trump, Iran’s acceptance of the inspections was a major condition for further negotiations and one of several concessions that influenced his decision not to proceed with a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
The U.S. president noted that while the strait would remain open, American naval assets would remain in position should circumstances require the blockade to be reinstated.
Trump also unveiled measures aimed at easing humanitarian pressures inside Iran. He said funds and sanctions relief approved by the U.S. Treasury would be placed in a U.S.-controlled escrow account and used exclusively to purchase food and medical supplies from the United States.
The supplies, he said, would include agricultural products such as corn, wheat and soybeans sourced from American farmers.
Describing conditions in Iran as a humanitarian crisis, Trump argued that urgent assistance was needed to prevent further hardship among the Iranian population.
“Despite their protestations and false statements to the contrary, Iran has fully and completely agreed to the highest level of nuclear inspections long into the future,” Trump wrote.
“This will ensure nuclear honesty. If they did not agree to this, there would be no further negotiations.”
He added that talks between Washington and Tehran were progressing positively and expressed optimism about the outcome of the discussions.
“The Money and/or Sanctions that the U.S. Treasury is releasing goes into escrow, controlled by the U.S.A., and will be used for the purchase of food and medical supplies exclusively from the United States,” Trump said.
“This is a humanitarian crisis, and I feel it is necessary to help, now, before it is too late. Talks are going well.”
