Cleric To Nigerian Leaders: June 12 Should Serve As Constructive Platform For Showcasing People’s Needs Not Protests
The church head of New Seraph Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church, Yomi Sholoye has called the attention of Nigerian political big wigs in all sectors to use the nation’s Democracy Day to priotise the people’s deeds other than protests.
This, the cleric said during the unveiling of the Church’s centenary logo, held at the Faith Mission Church headquarters on Thursday in Lagos State.
According to Sholoye in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, noted that when there is a mutual understanding between leaders and citizens, good governance will be established.
While encouraging the leaders to
listen to people’s needs, a move to curb public distrust, described June 12 as a symbol of freedom, fulfilled dreams, and the actualisation of national aspirations.
Sholoye said; “Two years of present administration has been characterised by mix feelings of reforms and their actual bearing on the people.
“The government says its ongoing projects and reforms will benefit the people at the end, but the people are complaining of rise in cost of goods and services,
“June 12 used to be characterised by protests but I don’t think that should be the posture of its proponents this year.
“However, I believe it should now serve as a constructive platform for showcasing the people’s needs and aspirations to leaders who can take action and deliver meaningful development.”
June 12 is observed annually as Democracy Day in Nigeria to commemorate the annulled 1993 general election, which was widely regarded as free and fair and won by Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
The election was annulled by then-military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida(Rtd). NANS reports.
Sholoye, however, appealed to the Federal Government and subnational entities stop imposing
policies on the masses but rather focus on the needs of the people.
