Tinubu Charges Religious Leaders To Confront Terror, Kidnapping
President Bola Tinubu has urged religious and spiritual leaders across Nigeria to consistently speak out against terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and the misuse of religion to justify violence.
Tinubu made the call on Sunday in Kano in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the Grand Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tijani.
The President said religious leaders had a critical role in confronting extremism and promoting peace, justice and responsible citizenship, particularly among young people.
He urged religious institutions to strengthen peace education, religious literacy, scholarship and moral instruction, while encouraging political leaders and citizens to pursue justice and resolve grievances without resorting to violence.
“Your voices must be raised consistently against the murder of innocent people, against terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and the misuse of religion to justify cruelty,” Tinubu said.
The President also called on the Tijjaniyya community, whose networks span several countries, to deploy its influence towards reconciliation, countering violent extremism, youth guidance and humanitarian support.
He said Nigeria’s strategic position in West Africa and the wider Sahel region made peace and stability in the country important beyond its borders.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to freedom of worship and greater collaboration with religious and traditional institutions to promote peaceful coexistence and national cohesion.
He also paid tribute to the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, describing him as a voice of moderation and peace, and urged the Tijjaniyya community to preserve his legacy of scholarship, moral instruction and peaceful coexistence.
