Terror After Juma’at: Bandits Invade Niger Community, Abduct Residents
Terror reportedly struck Dekara community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Friday as armed men invaded the area shortly after residents observed Juma’at prayers.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community between 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., rounding up residents who had gathered for the congregational prayer.
The Chairman of Borgu LGA, Nasiru Abdullahi, confirmed the attack, saying Dekara, the largest community in the area, was among several communities affected.
He listed Gidan Zana, Sabon Gida and Masata as other affected communities.
Abdullahi said authorities were yet to establish the exact number of people abducted but were working with security agencies to respond to the attack and rescue those taken.
However, a survivor alleged that the attackers were members of the Lakurawa group, claiming that some residents were killed during the assault.
The survivor said the attackers arrived in large numbers, armed with guns, knives and machetes, and allegedly attacked residents after the Friday prayers.
The Niger State Police Command said it would provide feedback on the incident, but no official response had been received as of the time of filing this report.
The attack has heightened security concerns in communities around the Kainji Lake axis, with residents awaiting further intervention and confirmation of the number of people abducted.
