Tanker Inferno On Otedola Bridge Injures Two, Triggers Gridlock

Two people have sustained severe burn injuries in a tanker fire on Otedola Bridge in Lagos, triggering an emergency rescue operation and disrupting traffic on the busy route.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its emergency response team, working alongside other emergency agencies, rescued the victims from the scene.

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the victims suffered extensive burns and required urgent medical attention.

In a statement on Monday evening, Taofiq disclosed that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Rescue Unit evacuated the injured victims to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre, Toll Gate, where they were admitted for treatment.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also deployed personnel to contain and extinguish the inferno, prevent it from spreading and minimise further casualties and damage to surrounding infrastructure.

Other agencies involved in the coordinated response included the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency and police officers from the Alausa Police Division.

The fire forced motorists to divert from the affected section of the expressway, resulting in traffic gridlock on the bridge.

The incident adds to a series of road crashes, vehicle rollovers and tanker explosions recorded along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major route connecting Lagos to other parts of the country.

It also comes after a 33,000-litre tanker overturned at Ojota Bridge in Lagos, spilling its groundnut oil cargo onto the road. Authorities attributed that incident to suspected brake failure.
