‘Roads Alone Can’t Ease Hardship’ — Bala Mohammed’s Son Urges Payment Of Retirees’ Gratuities
Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed, son of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has urged his father to prioritise the payment of outstanding gratuities owed to retired civil servants, saying infrastructure development alone cannot address the economic hardship facing many residents.
Shamsuddeen made the appeal in a Facebook post titled, “Bridging the Gap: A Call for a Human-Capital Focused Policy,” where he argued that while roads and other public projects are important, they do little to ease the immediate financial struggles of families awaiting their retirement benefits.
According to him, the current administration has recorded significant achievements in infrastructure over the past seven years, with the construction of roads, schools and hospitals transforming the landscape of Bauchi State.
He, however, stressed that many retirees and their families continue to endure hardship due to delays in the payment of their gratuities.
“The prevailing sentiment on the ground is that while infrastructure is vital, it does not alleviate the immediate economic hardship, the struggle for daily sustenance, or the pain of families still awaiting civil service gratuities,” he wrote.
The Governor’s son, however, called on the state government to adopt a more human-centred approach by ensuring retirees receive their outstanding entitlements, noting that doing so would provide relief to thousands of families and complement the administration’s infrastructural legacy.
He maintained that paying retirees’ gratuities would demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of citizens alongside its physical development projects.
