Oyo APC Accuses Makinde Of Preparing Another Public Asset For Private Developers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has accused Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration of planning to hand over the 40-year-old Agodi Government Fish Farm in Ibadan to Baywood Estate, warning against what it described as the conversion of public assets into private property.

The party alleged that the proposed move was part of a plan to expand the private estate around the Agodi Government Secretariat, following the recent destruction of part of the area’s conservation forest.

In a statement issued on Friday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC described the alleged plan as another example of what it called the Makinde administration’s poor management of public assets and disposal of government properties to private interests.

Located between Agodi Gardens and Dandaruu Stream, the fish farm is a major agricultural and educational facility established about four decades ago. It houses offices, laboratories, demonstration farms, fish ponds and training centres for students, researchers and fish farmers.

The facility also accommodates Ogunpa Lake, where local and exotic fish species are bred for educational and commercial purposes.

The APC alleged that the government intended to clear the facility and merge its land with the adjoining Baywood Estate, accusing the governor of prioritising private estate development over agriculture and environmental protection.

The party also listed Trans Amusement Park, Agodi Gardens, the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), the Oyo State Library Board and the state Water Corporation among public institutions it claimed had suffered neglect or deterioration under the current administration.

Expressing concern over the alleged development, the APC warned that other government facilities, including the Agodi Government Secretariat, Government House and Cultural Centre complex, could also face threats.

It urged Makinde to suspend any plan to transfer the fish farm or other public facilities to private interests, while calling on elders and concerned residents to intervene.

The opposition party further demanded accountability over government lands and properties it alleged had been illegally sold or converted to private ownership.
