Oriire Abduction: Oyo APC Blasts Makinde Over UN Probe Call, Says It’s ‘Shameful’
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has strongly criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for the United Nations to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the move as “shameful, shocking and unbecoming of a leader.”
Governor Makinde, while receiving the rescued victims in Ibadan on Monday, urged the United Nations and international human rights organisations to conduct an independent investigation into the incident, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue were serious enough to warrant international scrutiny.
The governor had also alleged during a visit to Bauchi on Friday that the attack was orchestrated by those opposed to his reported 2027 presidential ambition.
Reacting in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the Oyo APC accused the governor of turning a sensitive security issue into political theatre.
“Oyo State has a governor who plays politics with everything, including the welfare and security of the masses,” the party said.
The APC further described Makinde’s appeal to the United Nations as evidence of poor leadership.
“Oyo APC describes Makinde’s outburst as the height of ineptitude, cluelessness and grandstanding,” the statement read, urging the governor to be “circumspect, decorous and statesman-like in his politicking even as he prepares to leave power in about 10 months.”
The opposition party argued that although insecurity remains a national challenge, Oyo State has become one of the worst-hit states in southern Nigeria under Makinde’s administration.
The party also dismissed the governor’s request for a United Nations investigation, citing Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“But for dirty politicking, naivety and cluelessness, an average elite should know about Article 2(7) of the United Nations Charter, which shields sovereign states from external interference,” the APC stated.
It further challenged the governor to submit his own administration to scrutiny over several issues, including the management of local government funds, the Bodija explosion relief fund, surveillance aircraft procurement, security-related contracts and other allegations contained in the statement.
The APC’s latest remarks add to the growing political controversy surrounding the Oriire abduction, which has continued to generate reactions from the Presidency, political parties and members of the public following Governor Makinde’s call for an international investigation.
