Dolly Parton’s Death: Trump Orders Week-Long Half-Mast Tribute Across US
US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be flown at half-mast across the country for one week in honour of late country music legend Dolly Parton.
Trump announced the national mourning period in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, hours after Parton’s family announced her death at the age of 80.
Describing Parton as “one of the greatest Country singers” ever, Trump said her death was a major loss to millions of people.
“There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” the president wrote, ordering the flags lowered from 6pm on Tuesday.
“Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you,” he added.
Parton, widely regarded as the “Queen of Country Music,” died after a decades-long career that produced global hits including Jolene and I Will Always Love You.
She sold more than 100 million records worldwide and wrote thousands of songs. I Will Always Love You gained further global acclaim after Whitney Houston recorded a version of the song in 1992.
Born the fourth of 12 children in a poor farming family in rural Tennessee, Parton began singing at the age of six in a local church where her grandfather was pastor.
Her musical journey was influenced by her mother’s folk songs and an aunt who played guitar and wrote songs.
Parton had cancelled a series of Las Vegas concerts in May amid health concerns, revealing that she was receiving treatment for an unspecified illness.
