CAN Raises Religious Freedom Concerns Over Christian Woman’s Conviction In Borno
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman, Lami Samuel Dawa, in Borno State, calling for the protection of her fundamental rights and a fair judicial process.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the case reportedly arose from circumstances involving an adult woman’s conversion to Christianity.

However, the association noted that the precise facts and legal basis of the conviction were still being verified, adding that an appeal had been filed.
CAN said it would allow the judicial process to run its course while monitoring developments in the case.
The Christian body said the matter raises important questions about religious freedom and the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
It maintained that every individual has the right to choose, change or practise a religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.
CAN called on relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties are protected and that justice is served in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
The association added that it would continue to engage relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.
It reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different religious backgrounds and the protection of every citizen’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
