Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has unveiled a new approach to tackling insecurity, saying the solution must go beyond deploying security personnel and equipment.

Sule made the declaration on Monday while inaugurating the Nasarawa State Security Advisory Council at the Government House.

According to the governor, the security challenges confronting the state have become increasingly complex and require a coordinated, intelligence-driven response that also addresses the social and economic conditions fuelling criminality.

He said sustainable security would require justice, dialogue, responsible leadership, economic opportunities, community participation and trust between residents and government.

Sule urged the newly inaugurated council to work closely with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations and women’s groups to strengthen intelligence gathering and early-warning mechanisms within communities.

He said the council would complement, rather than replace, existing security agencies, including the police, armed forces, DSS and NSCDC, through strategic coordination, analysis and policy advice.

The council, chaired by retired Major General Elias Abba, a former force commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force, will also advise the government on community policing and ways to bridge the gap between government and grassroots communities.

Responding on behalf of the council, Abba pledged to address poverty, unemployment and social dislocation as underlying drivers of crime.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, he also promised that the council would support efforts to ensure political activities in Nasarawa remain peaceful and within the law.

“Political ambition must never outweigh the sanctity of human life or the stability of our communities,” Abba said.
