Nigeria, Canada Sign Deal To Launch Direct Flights
Nigeria and Canada have signed an expanded air transport agreement that paves the way for direct scheduled flights between both countries, marking a major boost for trade, tourism, business travel and educational exchanges.
The agreement was signed in Abuja by officials of both governments after a review of the existing Bilateral Air Services framework.
According to a statement by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the deal allows both countries to designate multiple airlines to operate 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly cargo flights.
The agreement also grants Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights for cargo operations, a move expected to improve air connectivity, reduce travel time and lower logistics costs.
The ministry said the development would further strengthen commercial and people-to-people ties, particularly as more than 25,000 Nigerians currently hold valid Canadian study permits.
Officials described the agreement as the first major expansion of the Nigeria-Canada air services framework since it was originally negotiated in 2014.
