‘This Cannot Continue’: Fani-Kayode Condemns Alleged Killing Of Nigerians In South Africa
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has condemned the alleged torture and killing of Nigerians in South Africa, warning that continued attacks on Nigerian citizens must not go unpunished.
In a statement shared on his official social media page on Tuesday, Fani-Kayode said he watched a secretly recorded video allegedly showing a Nigerian national being tortured to death by members of the South African Police Service.
According to him, the footage showed the victim being suffocated with a plastic bag while pleading for help.
“I just watched a secretly recorded video of a Nigerian national being beaten to death by members of the South African Police Service in his home, and I am mortified,” he said.
The former minister described the alleged killings, racial profiling and persecution of Nigerians in South Africa as unacceptable, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable.
Fani-Kayode disclosed that he raised the matter during a meeting with South Africa’s Foreign Minister on Monday, where both sides agreed to work towards easing tensions and strengthening bilateral relations.
He, however, maintained that meaningful progress would require justice for victims.
The former minister further alleged that about 90 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa since 2022, with no convictions recorded, while claiming that six Nigerians have lost their lives this year alone, including three allegedly killed by South African police officers.
“If our relations are to stabilise with South Africa, this has to stop… Action speaks louder than words,” he said.
