Makinde Gets Assembly’s Nod For Annual Leave, Lawal Steps In

Governor Seyi Makinde has secured the approval of the Oyo State House of Assembly to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal set to step in as Acting Governor during the period.

The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a formal letter from Governor Makinde, in compliance with constitutional provisions requiring a governor to notify the legislature before proceeding on leave.

The governor, in the letter read by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, said his annual leave would commence on August 10 and end on September 11, 2026. He is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.

Following deliberations, the lawmakers unanimously approved the request, paving the way for Deputy Governor Lawal to oversee the day-to-day administration of the state throughout the governor’s absence.

The Assembly expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s ability to ensure seamless governance, citing his previous experience in acting capacities.

“The House is confident in the seamless continuity of governance in the state under the deputy governor,” the lawmakers stated in their resolution.

Speaking after the approval, Deputy Speaker Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing leave, adding that the Assembly would continue to maintain a cordial working relationship with the executive for the benefit of Oyo residents.

He described the state’s governance structure as stable, noting that ongoing programmes and policies would continue uninterrupted during the governor’s absence.

Lawmakers also commended Governor Makinde for complying with constitutional requirements by formally notifying the House before proceeding on leave, describing the move as a demonstration of respect for democratic governance and the rule of law.

The House thereafter directed that its resolution be transmitted to the executive arm for necessary action.
