Dignitaries Gather In Abuja For Buhari’s One-Year Memorial

Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, state governors and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, are among prominent dignitaries attending the one-year memorial ceremony in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

The remembrance programme, holding at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, Asokoro, has also attracted members of Buhari’s family, including former First Lady Aisha Buhari and the late president’s children.

Also in attendance are former cabinet ministers and aides, past and serving governors, traditional and religious leaders, current and former lawmakers, retired and serving diplomats, as well as former service chiefs.

The solemn gathering is expected to feature prayers, tributes and reflections on the life, leadership and legacy of the late Nigerian leader.

A commemorative book titled Tributes and Condolences in Honour of Muhammadu Buhari, containing messages from world leaders and other notable personalities, will also be unveiled during the event.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 and earlier as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.

He was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites shortly after his death, as the nation observed a period of national mourning.
